Is God Fair?

Updated: Mar 25, 2023

I want to share some of my thoughts on the topic of Gods justice. This is something that I have struggled with understanding and accepting, but by the grace of God he is helping me grasp it more and more each day. Some bible truths are hard for us to grasp and understand, but that is because they are given to us by an infinite powerful being who is much greater then our finite little brains.

DEFINITION of fair is: a person receiving exactly what they deserve. SYNONYMS of fair are: just, trustworthy and honorable.

People often ask, if God is a fair God, then why did he create humans knowing that some would go to hell? Why not save them all? But Why should God save humans at all? Whose standard are we putting God up against. Ours? According to us humans, we think that we ALL deserve to be saved. But how are we deserving? What did we do to deserve to be saved? The Bible says that even our righteous deeds are like filthy rags. We did absolutely nothing to deserve salvation. So if we’re speaking of fairness, then it is totally fair for God to send ALL of us to hell.

First of all, the Bible says in Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Galatians 3:10 “For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” We were all cursed because no one could obey the law. “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us” Galatians‬ ‭3:13‬ ‭and James 2:10 “For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it.”

Deuteronomy 32:4 says “He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are JUST. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and JUST IS HE.” Because God is just, he couldn’t just sweep sin under a rug. Someone still had to pay for sin. Sin=death. And because he is merciful and loving, that someone is Jesus. He took all of sin upon himself and died in our place and now, every time that God looks upon us, he sees Jesus’ righteousness in us. We are saved because of Gods great mercy and not because of anything we have done or because God looked at us and thought that we were so lovely and deserved to be saved.

So all of this being said, when we judge God for not being fair towards us and for being selfish, let’s take a long hard look at the cross and see the gift we have been given. We judge according to our humanly standards and limit God according to them. But who are we compared to God?

•God’s ways, mind, and actions are just and pure, Ours often stem from self interest

•God is sovereign, we are not

•God is all knowing, we are limited in our understanding

•God loves selflessly, we are often selfish

•God was and is and will be holy, we are by nature sinful

•God is self-sufficient, we are not

•God is the creator and we are the creature

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?

Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it?

On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— while the morning stars sang together and all the angels[a] shouted for joy?

“Who shut up the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb, when I made the clouds its garment and wrapped it in thick darkness,

when I fixed limits for it and set its doors and bars in place, when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther; here is where your proud waves halt’?

“Have you ever given orders to the morning,

or shown the dawn its place"

Job 38: 4-12

God is worthy of all praise, glory, and honor! Some might call that selfish.. but you see, the thing is, God is all of the things that were listed above and so much more! We are not. When we look out for our own interests, that makes us selfish because we are sinful and are not deserving of praise. When God demands our worship, that doesn’t make him selfish, because he deserves it! The creator created humanity, so that we would worship and give him glory! Why? Because he is good, perfect, holy; loving, majestic, and pure. How can we possibly even think that we understand more then God on what’s fair and what’s not!? Any truth and any standard of good and justice, should be placed in perspective of God, because it started with God and it ends with God. for God existed before the creation of the world and he will exist after the world and everything in it will perish.

"For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him" Colossians 1:16.

“But who are you, a human being, to talk back to God? “Shall what is formed say to the one who formed it, ‘Why did you make me like this?’ ”Does not the potter have the right to make out of the same lump of clay some pottery for special purposes and some for common use?” Romans 9:20-21

I am in awe, of how glorious God is and that he would send his son on earth, to take on human form, just so that we could be forgiven and have direct access to him. May you be encouraged my friends and find great comfort in knowing, that this God isn’t distant and offers salvation for anyone who calls upon him and believes in him.
